That's how one commenter aptly described this story by Michael Totten of his time earlier this year getting stuck in Rome as a hostage of Alitalia, the Italian state airline.
It's stories like this that make me take stock of how good I've got it when the worst I can generally expect to have happen to me on a flying day is for my flight to get delayed a couple hours and sit in a wine bar using wi-fi at my leisure, or maybe have to spend the night in a nice comfy hotel in a connection city I wouldn't mind exploring a little anyway.
