They get all the sex they want on TV, my overseas friends are fond of telling me. But violence? Nuh-uh.
John Kricfalusi won't exactly be thrilled. A decade after network censors in America chopped up his most famous TV show, the DVD of Seasons 1 and 2 is now being released in the UK - with the "Hanging Song" from "Out West" completely sliced out.
To obtain this category cuts of 3m 2s were required. The cuts were Compulsory. Cut required to remove a sequence in which the subject of hanging is presented as comedic, fun and risk free, on the grounds of potential harm to the likely audience and in accordance with the Video Recordings Act 1984.
Reasonable people can disagree on whether sex or violence is better or worse for kids to be exposed to. But this—censoring art without even any regard for age, in a way that seems designed merely as a dig at the caveman Americans and their primitive death penalty—should at least go to show that no supposedly "free" and "progressive" country has a monopoly on being mature about what kinds of artistic expression its people are allowed to see.
