Well! Looks like eMusic has read the writing on the wall:
Get 25 free iPod-compatible downloads just for trying us out!
Of course, all that means in their case is that the songs they have for people to download are plain old MP3 files, sans DRM because they're from artists who don't care about DRM. But marketing such files as iPod-compatible actually makes for a significant competitive advantage these days, much to the teeth-grinding chagrin of all the WMA-based services who are finding out that "Doesn't work with an iPod" speaks louder to customers than "Doesn't require an iPod".
Smart move on eMusic's part: turning their weakness into an advantage. So what if you've never heard of anybody whose music we host? At least you can play their stuff on your iPod!
But then, their server seems to be screwed up at the moment, so let's hope their engineers are up to the task...
UPDATE: Apple knows its JavaScript.
They'd better, if they're going to keep ahead of people like Cabel Sasser.
