I guess this is how you know you're here to stay: when clueless MSM outlets write articles breathlessly predicting your demise.
Kara O’Bryon, 22, considers the iPod “gratuitous,” another expensive device that people claim the need to have. Her CD player, she says, cost $40, and she’s fine with it.
“I don’t see the appeal” of the iPod, says O’Bryon. “Everyone I know who has one is always telling me, ‘I can’t believe you don’t have one.’ ” That turns her off even more, O’Bryon says.
“I like getting up and picking out five CDs that I want to take to work with me,” O’Bryon adds. “I don’t need to have 2,000 songs with me all day, every day.”
Boy, that sure shut me down. Who needs those darn horseless carriages, anyway? Who needs to be able to hear their mothers talking through a plastic speaker from thousands of miles away? Who needs penicillin, when a nice dab of Lister's Carbolic Unguent has worked so well all these years?
I can completely understand why someone would stick with a $25 portable CD player if it fits their budget better. But every time I see someone standing on the curb waiting for the light to change, holding a CD player out in an outstretched hand, carefully keeping it horizontal so it doesn't skip, I marvel that there are people who would choose that over an iPod, or any MP3 player for that matter. In the end it boils down to sour grapes: "I'd rather not spend the money on a better means of listening to music; so I'll just convince myself that what I already have is better." All I can say is: Sorry you feel that way. Now you might wanna move aside so the stampede to the iPod store doesn't knock that thing out of your hands.
Besides, any day now the iPod's competitors will eat it alive... right?
