20:55 - It is a thing of rare and surpassing beauty

(top) link
My new scanner is here. Microtek 9800XL large-format scanner from Digital Foto Discount Club.

Oh, and how my heart leaps for joy! For behold!

No huge and hideous SCSI dongles. No more positioning the thing six inches away from the wall to make room for the 2-inch-deep terminator/adapter and the broad shoulders and unbendable thick neck of the SCSI cable itself. No more, I say! For those two cables signal my long-awaited foray into the modern world: FireWire.

First I was worried that plugging in the scanner would use up the only FireWire 400 port on the back of the G5 (there's a FW 800 port on the back and another FW 400 on the front); but no! Like all good full-fledged FireWire devices, this baby has two ports. Behold the passthru. And I can plug my iPod into the other end, and it charges and mounts just like it should, without the scanner needing to be powered on or anything. It doesn't even need to be plugged in.

And it's a full 17x12" scan bed, too. It's actually quite a bit smaller than its predecessor, the 6400XL-- at least an inch narrower, so it can actually fit over here on the right side of my desk. I'll probably still want to build a proppable tray for it, so I can have the desk space back and a full range of overhang surface on both sides-- but it'll do just fine here for now.

And it makes the cutest squeaky noises! It sounds like it's from The Future.
