I'd like to see more of this to know just how versatile the technology is in relation to the amount of data input you'd need to make it work right—I mean, the whole point of modeling 3D characters in polygons is so that you can control them in real time via a relatively lightweight stream of "puppeteering" commands, and the more prerendering of detail you load into the model, the less flexible it can be in real-time practice—but this is pretty damn good, for a two-minute rigged demo.

From reading the article, it seems to have been an extremely elaborate high-tech form of rotoscoping. They matched their animation frame-for-frame with an original film of a real woman.

If they hadn't prefaced the demo with statements about Emily being synthetic, I would never have known. Completely believable from my perspective.

I'm more critical of effects than the average Joe, but less critical than a lot of tech/art people. I'm guessing that the average person would be completely taken in by such a character, and would even actively defend it as real.

All that said, I'd like to see a high-resolution version. Online Flash doesn't exactly lend itself to effective visual critiquing.

Facial motion capture has been high on the list of "gotta have it!" in computer gaming for a while. At the Game Developer Conference a couple of years ago, there were no less than a dozen exhibitors with advanced mo-cap selling their wares. Several were specialized in faces; one was about hands (and nothing else).

Freaky.

Of course, this also means that in about ten, twenty years you won't be able to trust video evidence at a trial, or what you see on TV.
