15:55 - Unfair Competition

My land, when did this happen?

Apple's market share in what NPD calls the "premium" category, or laptop and desktop PCs selling for $1,000 or more, is nothing short of phenomenal: 66 percent. That's right, two-thirds.

Two thirds.

And for that matter, the same source quotes them at 14% market share for all PCs—a tiny number by comparison, but wasn't it wishful thinking to toss around numbers as high as 6% just two or three years ago?

And what I find interesting is that it isn't even due to any far-and-away coolness about the current product lineup these days. iMacs are old news. Mac Pros look the same as the five-year-old Power Mac G5, the only real difference being speed. MacBooks and MacBook Pros are—to use a hackneyed and usually ill-considered reviewer word—"sleek", but they're hardly groundbreakingly cool like the TiBook or even the girly-purse iBook were. The MacBook Air and the Mac mini are niche computers that raise an eyebrow but don't define the market; aside from them, the Mac lineup is about as staid as it's been in years. And this is what's gotten them to twice or thrice their traditional market share even at the lowest estimate?

I think people don't really weigh too many details when making the decision of what computer to buy. Much as someone will fixate on a certain car manufacturer and then go to a dealership specializing in that brand to be sold a car from a market-spanning series rather than spending the time to research a specific tier and then trawl up and down the auto row looking for just the right balance of brand-agnostic features, I think people are getting it into their heads—from the ubiquity in pop culture and office tech buzz—that what the savvy buyer ought to do in this day and age is "get a Mac". Once that decision is made, it's between the various Mac models, not between competing brands.

This has been a long time coming, and Steve is no doubt pleased with himself. Far be it from me to say he doesn't deserve to be.

Via Lance.
